I emailed a coach to ask if my daughter could practice with her and her response was well we are going to keep practice closed in April but we will have try outs in early May. I thought WOW tryouts before half the spring season is even over, that is really early. What are other people's thoughts? I really wish there was a way to have a rule to not to let them start until after Memorial Day and make the 3 weeks between Memorial Day and Father's Day tryout season so teams are set by the end of June.
On the flip side, I like the idea of teams have some open practices throughout the year so players and parents can get a no pressure look at the team, on a night when they are not practice with their current team, and vice versa so both sides can basically make a decision during the regular season whether or not the player and parent like the coaching style of the coach. This could potentially save parents and players the time and money to learn that the coach was not for them before joining the next season and not like the team and coach.
Thoughts?

Independent Soccer - good question! The good news is that I have noticed a trend in the last two years for a return to sanity in the tryout world with tryouts happening later. However, especially for the land-grab years of U12-U13, I have seen tryouts (and the subsequent "must accept within 24 hour" offer) even BEFORE the season begins for the following fall! Teams that do the right thing and try to wait wind up having lost their better players without realizing it or finding that they can't find the quality of players that they might want. This is also made worse by the large number of clubs and teams that are currently in the area and not enough talent to go around
However, the large group tryout process is probably has hated by the coaches as it is the parents and players because while it can show some talent, it rewards aggression over teamwork and chemistry. While I can understand a coach keeping training "closed" until May so that the team can train and so that each new player that shows up is not viewed as a threat by the other players, I think you are doing the right thing. Even if you can't participate in a training session, see if the teams/coaches you are interested are playing nearby and go see a game or two. Go watch a practice from afar. See how the players treat the coach and the refs. That way, in May, you'll have limited the choices and can better target your time.
Good luck!
