Following the Poolesville vs Damascus Girls Varsity game, there was suddenly a lot of back and forth between players and students from both schools on Twitter. Most was benign but some was personal and all of it was in poor taste. Back in the dark ages before social media, post-game diatribes were limited to the local McDonalds or teammate's house. Twitter and other sites certainly have their uses but name calling and excuse-making after a game should not be one of them.
I remember a high school coach on the first day of practice making it very clear that, as members of the team, we represented the school regardless of whether or not we wearing the jersey. I would hope that today's coaches are making the same policy statements and helping our youth to realize that pre- or post-game trash talking is not acceptable. It is a good life lesson for kids to learn or have we lost the concept of a being graceful in both victory and defeat?
